At school they taught me how to be So pure in thought and word and deed They didn't quite succeed For everything I long to do No matter when or where or who Has one thing in common, too It's a sin.

...just that at the right place, right time, all this make sense to me...
Well under this low, lonely light I might be still in sight, You were a girl, now you're a wife Do not these memories stir you From your long and peaceful night's
augie march, asleep in perfection

again, augie march, owen's lament. Beautiful melody that got me into the words, bout war...
Level your fretting. I won't be forgetting the flush of your face When I lifted you level to me and a wattle tree framed your body. In whispers welling with the dope of a new Spring You said "Kill me a dynasty or our love won't mean a thing..." A bullet for a diamond ring. A favour promised A promise delivered and more to you - It's only a war I'll be back to your shore before you know it I'm gone, Then I'll cover you body.
And if you have to go please go lightly, Keep it to a foxtrot whether he's a fox or not. Keep it cold, keep all your heat for me - I'll be needing it for when I'm cold you see? Let your children remind you of me Whether by another or by the ghost in me in you - There goes my baby. I would think of you and a palmtree would cover your body.
You - in love and war we are bound by a law, it goes to you and then to yours to recover my body.
She bound me up and hugged me 'O how the mother loves thee' She covered my body In a ragged flag and bloody - O not on your life.

I think some folks should cover this song. But no one can have the panache of Scott Walker lah...
Verse 1
Naked as sin, an army towel covering my belly Some of us blush, somehow knees turn to jelly Next, next! I was still just a kid, there were a hundred like me I followed a naked body, a naked body followed me Next, next! I was still just a kid when my innocence was lost In a mobile army whorehouse, gift of the army, free of cost Next, you're next!
Verse 2
I really would have liked a little touch of tenderness Maybe a word, just a smile, some instant happiness but no, no! Next, next! Oh it... it wasn't so tragic, the high heavens didn't fall But how much of that time I hated being there at all Next, next! Now I always will recall the brothel truck, the flying flags The queer lieutenant who slapped our asses as if we were fags Next, you're next!
Verse 3
I swear on the wet head of my first case of gonorrhea It's his ugly voice that I forever hear Next, next! That voice that stinks of corpses, of whisky and of mud It is the voice of the nations, that thick voice of blood Next, next! And since then, each woman I've taken to bed Seems to laugh in my arms and whisper through my head... "Next, next..."
Verse 4
All the naked and the dead should hold each other's hands As they watch me scream at night in a dream no-one can understand Next, next! And when I'm not screaming in a voice grown dry and hollow I stand on endless naked lines of the following and the followed Next, next! One day I'll cut my legs off and burn myself alive Anything, I'll do anything to get out of line, just to survive And never to be next, oh never to be next... Next!
- Scott Walker, 'Next' which is a reinterpretation of a French song

This one is one that Scott Walker wrote himself. Fucken killer lyrics... I'm amazed how some ppl write stuff like this. Then again, Iron Maiden does it too... but SW does it baroque pop style, macham classical music.
Anybody seen a Knight pass this way? I saw him playing chess with Death yesterday His crusade was a search for God and they say It's been a long way to carry on
Anybody hear of plague in this town? The town I've left behind was burnt to the ground A young girl on a stake, her face framed in flames Cried "I'm not a witch, God knows my name"
The Knight he watched with fear, he needed to know He ran where he might feel God's breath And in the misty church he knelt to confess The face within the booth was Mister Death
"My life's a vain pursuit of meaningless miles" "Why can't God touch me with a sign?" "Perhaps there's no-one there" answered the booth And Death hid within his cloak and smiled
"This morning I played chess with Death" said the Knight "We played that he might grant me time" "My Bishops and my Knights will shatter his flanks" "And still I might feel God's heart in mine"
And through confession's grille Death's laughter was heard The Knight cried "No - you've cheated me!" "But still I'll find a way. We'll meet once again" "And once again continue to play"
They met within the woods, the Knight, his Squire and friends And Death said "Now the game shall end" The final move was made, the Knight hung his head And said "You've won. I've nothing left to play"
The minstrel, filled with visions, sang to his love To look against the stormy sky The Knight, his Squire and friends, their hands held as one Solemnly danced towards the dawn
His hourglass in his hand, his scythe by his side The master Death, he leads them on The rain will wash away the tears from their faces And as the thunder cracked, they were gone.
- Scott Walker, 'The Seventh Seal'
How the fuck someone write lyrics like this confounds me absolutely!!!

nah, Scott Walker's style is like proto-Belle & Sebastian... not too folkish but heavier on the orchestral arrangement

i love the gybe monologues .........
the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides and a dark wind blows
the government is corrupt and we're on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn
we're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine and the machine is bleeding to death
the sun has fallen down and the billboards are all leering and the flags are all dead at the top of their poles
it went like this:
the buildings tumbled in on themselves mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair
the skyline was beautiful on fire all twisted metal stretching upwards everything washed in a thin orange haze
i said: "kiss me, you're beautiful - these are truly the last days"
you grabbed my hand and we fell into it like a daydream or a fever
we woke up one morning and fell a little further down - for sure it's the valley of death
i open up my wallet and it's full of blood

I thunk it's da reverb dei that enticed me dei... hey send over msn? i wanna hear/watch. for me. i think too many good lyrics around to share. but my fave would probably be from owen, or the appleseed cast. sometimes sunny day real estate also got damn good lyrics, those poetic, poking fun at society, and i love their acoustic song. every shining time you arrive. its like, wah lan, every time the girl or gf arrive, its like she's shining. neh neh pok, i should have written that first, then girls will come crawling all over me.
