so give up music and do something else might be good ;D
just another effect related post over at HC effect forum came this. Once again, it just proven one thing again. What music or things that seem so great to some, might be really old for another. Guess being humble really goes a long way...
Here is goes...
Its funny reading all these pages... Very very funny. A few people I can tell know what they are talking about, and a lot of people seem to be unaware of harsh noise's past. A very old past. I myself have been a "noiseician" longer than a "musican". Noise is nothing new. From early Italian and French inovators in the 40's, to John Cage in the 50's, NIHILIST SPASM BAND in the 60's, Throbing Gristle in the 70's, Merzbow in the 80's, and Xome in the 90's. Noise has come a long way.
I was always drawn to noise because it was anti culture, and anti everything almost. At that point on my life it was the music that realy spoke to me, and I was drivin to make it myself. I started to make pedal baised harsh noise. As years went on Noise gained popularity (and it is curently at an all time high with articles in Spin, Rolling Stone, and MTV) and unlitimatly pretentiousness. About a year ago I was compleatly sickened by the scene, keep in mind this was at the cusp of Wolf Eyes and Black Dice breaking it. And I actualy sold off all my pedals on my noise board (which I included an early picture of), and stoped playing all together. Now for clarification here are some different types of noise:
pedal drivin harsh noise: usualy just a series of pedals linked together to self oscilate, think early merzbow, xome, stimbox, KK Null.
voice drivin harsh noise: where your voice is the signal generator, which is then prossesed to all hell. Think Mike Paton, Emil Beaulieau, R.H.Y. Yau.
ambient noise: just what it sounds like, lots of reverb usualy more "gallery welcome". Knurl is the man for this.
power noise: this is one of the earlies forms of noise as we know it, it has links to early industrial. Sheet metal, cinder blocks, contact mics. Early guys such as Einsterzende Nubaten, Throbing Gristel, and now Wolf Eyes. It can have guitars, and other "standard instruments".
power electronics: Geberaly has a beat, is VERY closely linked to industrial and IBM. A lot of the time now is computer baised. Think Black Sand Desert, Cock E.S.P.
There are WAY more... But I will leave it at that... Do some reaserch, split your eardrums on some early 80's Japanese Noise... And always remeber - someone else has usualy already done it...
Cheers, and this was not intened as a flame...
