you can't be serious =( i feel devastated now... ... ... ...
no la, no volume drop off what! had no problems with that while i was using a friends gfx-8. distortion quality wise, i'd say it's fine for digital efx you know? not exactly warm tubish love with high definition all around, but good enough to still raise an eyebrow or 2 (eyebrows only please).
oh please let the G2 rockass. pleaseeeeeeeeee.

hahahaha.... its all a matter of taste lah.
I find Zoom pedals esp with the distortion on have that "hiding in the amp" sound. That is based on what i felt of Zoom2020, 3030, 707 and GFX4.
Damn I'm losing credibility discussing about multieffects in this wanky forum....

hahaha don't worry boss, you'll be reimbursed with style-o/ gutsy and ballsy points for continuing.
I do agree that it hides the natural flavour of the amp, you'r right on that. but whether it downgrades your sound or plays it up a notch, all a matter of how you work the efx yeh? =) especially for gigging use, you don't always have a choice with the amp selection, so to me the multi-efx will be sort of my saving grace la. and price wise...
still haven't heard anything from mrmisse about the g7.lut zoom multi-efx... ... =/

oh and another thing to note since you say about the unpredictability of amps for gigging, jamming and home practise. You can adjust until swee swee for your home setup and volume. Go jamming that preset sounds like dung. Then you adjust again till swee swee (note the studio hours are ticking and your band members are bored looking at you pushing buttons) ok it sounds good studio wise. After jamming go back home, play some more... and you think... hmmm maybe I should tweak this preset a bit to make it sounds warmer/rounder/bigger. Damn I'm good, you'd say to yourself. Then next day is the gig. You go there happily plug in everything and you still sound like dung. You quickly switch back to the studio setting that you've cleverly archived and you still sound like dung. And then you kanchiong spider turn this turn that and then wot was supposed to be a soundcheck becomes a multieffects pedal setup session. Soundcheck usually last 5-10 mins at local gigs innit? Ok that was a bit extreme but it did happened to me. Most of the time its the amp simulator, distortion and some other tone modification banks that needs to be eliminated. Multieffects to me are good for its delay, reverbs and SOME modulations. Multieffects modulations are usually too over the top to put into any good use. I'd use at least an outboard wah and distortion with it. Ok the last time I've used multieffects was around 10 years back. Those zoom pedals that I've tried out were bought and sold to friends in Msia on the criteria that they wanted cheap good and got all kinda sounds. Did I just blew my "Custom effects builder" credibility again by discussing multieffects... auwww.... my ass is gonna hurrrrrtttt.....

Ps.s: so bringing in the g series or not!

hahaha.... no lah... i don't dislike multieffects that much but just relating to you what i've experienced. In fact I do miss the sound of my Zoom2020 coupled with my DOD Classic Fuzz. THAT was the sound of my first shoegazing band. And that was my first 2 pedals. ahhhh.... nostalgia.... ouch =/ i can feel your intense dislike all the way from here man. you make a really good point over the fact that it's impossible to reproduce that sweet sound you've achieved over endless tweaking in your room and then at the gig place ah seng. then again i think you're being a bit too harsh when you play it out as if you get a totally different sound. i'm sure the quality will differ, but the basic tone and shape should be retained yes? i value your input sir! ps: your argument can always be applied to single stomppedal setups! whatever it is, it's not the environment that suits your sound, it's your sound that has to suit the environment! or something... head pain thinking. anyone else have a take on this?
