I am thinking of creating some ambience/textural guitar sounds for some of my band's instrumental songs. Just curious to find out if you guys know how did the radiohead guys create the following sounds/noises: a) Karma Police - At approx. 3:45 into the song, there's this swirling guitar sound that constantly increases in volume, culminated at 4:05 and then the pitch started to drop till it faded out. b) fitter/happier - There's this chopper sound at the end, somewhere at 1:44 to 1:52... Come, let's discuss and share your knowledge. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated too

i m guessing some gain, delay (DL4?), tremolo (demeter?) or even a ringstinger ring mod.. but then again.. he's got alot of gadgets like transistor radios n weird shit.. but i think the DL4 is the main culprit..

Boss, can borrow your skills? You recreate that feel, drop by and record that part, then we cut and paste in protools....

aint some of their efx are computer based program? Maybe its some computer effect patches doing work.
for the karma police one, i can think of using the EH 16 sec delay, on the looper side, record the short riff and let it play back over and over again, theres slider which can adjust the volume and the pitch + tempo
for the choppy sound, perhaps a ring mod with exp pedal controlling the parameter?

Precisely why i need to enlist the help of the boys in Love Experiment Do I have a EH 16 sec delay? NO Do I have a Moog ring mod + Exp Pedal? NO Well, even if i have em', i wouldn't the shit know how to use em'

okay...that Patrick guy is certified crazy man.... For 'Karma Police', the swirling part at the end is done by Ed O'Brien. Apparently, he's feedbacking some delayed parts he's playing. The delay unit he used is some rack-mounted stuff with repeats on max. to get that swirling sound, just fiddle with the delay knob... I think he turned from max to min. You can use a DL4 with an expression and play some notes while doing the above.... at least that's what I hope to do. ;D

lizard man...don't anyhow say ah. but he is right...i do love choppy tremolo, no thanx to radiohead and kent. but it will ultimately disorient your drummer so you gotta play along to click track!

you want choppy...hogan used a knife to lightly chop-hit the strings for one of the padres' song. can't remember which one though. but apparently that's what the guitarists do back in the day (cavemen days of guitar effects). i love the way they recorded and make strange effects back in the 60's. like how they recorded chorus by putting a mike in between two zinc plates or how they made the bass drum sound thick by rolling a long piece of cardboard around the kick drum ala led zeppelin. we are all pampered musicians la...

I've read this article about Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
Apparently, the guitarist (Peter Hayes?) used so much chrous and tremolo on one tune... the drummer nearly died while recording the song. His timing was completely thrown off by all the effects...
It can be really jialat... ;D

you said it lizardman. playing to click track can be a bitch. but the result would be wonderful.
i remember some dude told me about the queensryche drummer playing to click track during live concert and it was like a drum machine. but i thought i heard quite a few mistakes...hehe. well, whatever works la
