Taken from one effects forum.. hopefully to spur your GASes... hruhurhruhruhr i is evurl...
"I think it would be wise to look at the options from Mesa Boogie. I have entertained the options of modding an amp, looked at Splawn and Voodoo, but at the end of the day you are better off getting something from the factory.
Bogners are GREAT amps. People can sit here and say yeah but they are not REALLY good at something. I can attest to a les paul and this amp through a Mesa 2X12 with vintage 30's and to be honest you are hard pressed to find a better amp. Its solid. The Ubershall will tear down your house. The Exctasy is just that. EVERY MArshall you could ever imagine is in that amp. The high gain lead channel is something to behold.
Mesa Boogie Dual: These are Very good at one thing and one thing only. It is the classic One trick pony. It does it so well though.
Mesa Boogie F Series: check this out. ITs so good. the clean is as good as anything and the two overdrives are nice. When I need to buy a combo, I will be buying this amp. If anyone is selling an F-50 give me a shout.
Mesa Boogie Rect-o-Verb: The head is steller. Its voiced differently than the dual rec, and yes its better. It can't get all the insane gain the Dual can get, but it fits SOLID rock / metal needs. Insane gain is subjective. I like to cut through and sound like an AC DC on mega roids, or Metallica Load Re-load tone. Altough not a HUGE fan of those records, the toone is greasy and loose.
MArshalls: Overall these are so dissapointing. The TSL, DSL, and whatever other crap they make is just that. EVERY marshall I have seen is usually overhauled. Why? I have no idea. There are several opinions as to why, but rarely have I heard a good stock TSL, DSL. Just say no.
Bad Cats: Interesting animals and nice Blues Rock / hardrock amps. VERY expensive, but not worth it. A point to point amp is easy to engineer, and to have something light up is not worth 1700 dollars.
KOCH: YES KOCH, these are interesting welll defined gain amps. I owned one and sold it for my rectoverb. A High risk purchase as resale on these are bad, and you will take it in the shorts, but solid. Not built as well as MESA or Bogner, but DAMN they sound tastey. I took a little in the shorts, but not as bad as some recent e-bay purchases.
At the end of the day I say get the Mesa F-50. The reverb is killer, and the gain is nice. You could get a clean OD to through in front of it and Kill Kill UBer metal type of tones. A FD II, KOT or OCD will do. The OCD is a nice pedal, but it adds so much volume. CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you have the cash or can sell some stuff, get a Bogner Exctasy. Used they are nice. If you are ready to get married (read analogy below) then get a new one.
Modded amps sound nice, and probably are solid but I am not a fan of modding amps. I mean can't someone make a good product? The splawn stuff sounds solid, and so does the voodoo, but for the cash I'd look into saving and getting a BOGNER, Mesa or other boutique amp. Also at teh end of the day a modded amp sounds good to you, and there is not really a frame of reference for another buyer. You will most likely take a loss on a resale or be stuck with a piece of gear for the rest of your life. This can be either a good or bad thing.
The used market / ebay is a gear whore's best friend. IT allows us the opportunity to sample what we need to, and resell with basically just taking into account the cost of shipping.
Buying gear is like dating or getting married. You date lots of ugly effects to find perfection. Perfection being subjective, you date a lot of effects that you think or perfect. By the time your older than you want to be you find perfection, but at the end of the day it was in your face the entire time. This is just an analogy.. noting more or less.
