Hey hey, noticed you do not carry the usual gear as do most guitar shops but you're not exactly a "shop" either.
My ques is: I hear that there are a few variations of the Ibanez tubescreamer. Which according to you is the best model?? TS-9?? Is the TS really that transparant?? Can i use it as a boost??
By the way, I realli dig your RAT. Tks again Yong!!

Hey hey, noticed you do not carry the usual gear as do most guitar shops but you're not exactly a "shop" either. yeah.. haha.. u r right.. i'm not exactly a shop coz i dun even have one.. to put it in a wanky way.. it's more like a service heheh n to give more options around.. u can maybe say i am a alternate saturday stall.. or a fortnightly stall.. My ques is: I hear that there are a few variations of the Ibanez tubescreamer. Which according to you is the best model?? TS-9?? Is the TS really that transparant?? Can i use it as a boost?? well well.. tubescreamer.. maybe i'm not the right person to talk to about this.. coz i have only played w one so far n that's TS9DX.. i did however try the TS808 clone on the VS Jekyll n Hyde though.. donno how close that is to the real stuff.. everyone is doing mods on these like analogman, robert keeley etc.. there's probably endless different Tube Screamer that you can try.. I guess the answer always lies with personal preference.. jus like when u chose the Rat instead of the Big Muff.. for me, it's a matter of who does the job.. anyone has more expertise on this, please chip in.. grazie!!

oh yeah i did try a TS7 tonelok before n i think it wasn't all that good.. wasn't fat n wasn't warm.. they were probably just riding on their earlier success.. well, then again, maybe i tried a faulty one at cash converters..

All about the TS pedal www.analogman.com/ts9.htmmy0.000002 cent, haha, i also never really play with a real TS pedal before, but i never like the mids hump that seem like a character of the pedal. Maybe with some amps that have a sharp/treblish clean tone, the mids hump can be reduce and thus getting a better tone. But with some amps, thnink the heavy mids added on might soun too much For transparency wise, imho, TS style pedal(no mod, stock pedal) cant really be transparent as it add on the heavy mids into the tone to give a warm OD tone. I have been thinking a tranparent od tone is where the pedal when engage, adding just the over driven tone without affecting the original clean tone in term of bass/treble/mids response. Some pedals can be adjusted to do a clear od tone, but for TS style, i thot no matter how much knob turning on the pedal, it kind of hard to get the mids out of the way. As for boost, definitely, just set it to low gain/drive setting. Came across some site that says SRV used 2 TS pedal to get some of his tone, one as a boost and the other at higher setting for solo and stuff. Of all pedals, seem like there are indeed many many variation of TS style pedal, even from boutique maker, i guess each have their own character, knida hard to say which one is the best.... Antway, here is perhaps one of the most expensive of a OD based on the 808(??) The landgraff dynamic overdrive The internal organ of the landgraff od....

WaaA... tks 4 all input. Yep, all down to personal preferences. i guess the sound im looking 4 is more like the sound of a natural cranked up overdriven tube amp... than full blown distortion. really bright kinda sound.
also searching for the elusive "dirty" OD, not fuzz, just dirty sounding OD.
basically ANYTHING that compliments rythem playing, or even power chords. becos im still an amateur, so not looking 4 a fantastic tone 4 solo. i believe the rat can cut thru 4 solos so thts taken care of. so... yea, bright tone 4 rythems.

For overdrive, i like a boss dual overdrive, the green led side. Basically the red led side has got a thick distortion in it. Not bad either.
I like the overdrive side. At certain setting, i find that the od just add on to my clean tone without much increase in the bass/treble/mids. When playing individual strings, i still can hear the clarity of each string even with the overdrive....

Oh yea, been trying the combination of the dirty rat & boss turbo OD so any good settings can recommend. tks.
did try 2 push the vol up on the boss with drive & tone at a minimal of 1. i notice that this pedal allows u full strum without sounding overly distorted. its warm & thick for rythem playing. for xtra option, 4 the xtra boost, the rat comes in with minimal distortion & high filter & vol at halfway.
tis is the closest i can get to the sound i was describing so far.
the turbo function on my boss suck.

my fav settings for a rat is vol - 1 o'clock, distortion - 10/11 o'clock n filter - 10/11 o'clock.. that's my sweet spot.. n then u crank the amp n let the rat squeak..

never too late for another review. anyway ive got a ts9dx before. traded it off for a morley wah though. its very near ts808. it has 4 modes. hot, turbo, . mode and Ts9 mode. i use ts9 mode mostly. sounds warmer and 'twang-ier' than ts7. versatile pedal. a very good pedal to get.

Some information I got reading off the web, sources are reliable, but take it with a pinch of salt lah.
The TS9DX has a slightly different circuitry than the TS-9, or TS-9 RI. Apparently most ppl can't tell the diff anyway.
Dood: If you want something to boost your tube amp, get a booster instead, like the Rangemaster or Brian May-type boost. I think that is what you are looking for.
Why ppl like the TS-9:
1) cos it gives them at the mid-freq "boost" that Fender/Mesa/Vox lack. 2) Their heroes use it (i.e. SRV, Eric Johnson...) 3) It sounds warm and natural 4) It is QUITE transparent 5) It has a good buffered bypass (which helps against tone sucking in cables)
That's all i can think off, I think that it is not the ultimate pedal, but its hyped as one for reasons of myths....
cheers, airhole
