hmmm, how bout getting a amp with nice bell like clean tone and use a pedal like the hotcake to put it into heavy drive or distortion region for a more amp like distortion instead of pedals sounding distortion with lotsa frequency colouring to make it sound too sleek For a pedal like J&h, for the jekyll side, IMHO, i find it better and more suitable to use for just slight boost to some slight drive and with the hyde side engage to put it it into a heavy OD or classic distortion sound instead of a metal tone. As for the mesa sound in a j&h, i dont really find that(hehe, just my opinion, no hard feeling eh . Having a mesa v twin(might not be a total close comparison to a real recto distorion sound), gt-2, J&h version 1 in my distortion pedals lineup, i find all 3 have different character. The vtwin sound is really fat, mid rangey in a good way and a really "spongy" sounding distortion where the gt-2 and a j&h cant achieve. All in all, it up to individual and also the guitar/amp/eq setting that might determine which has the most unique tone for individual. Have fun playing Hmmm, nice to have a tone discussion, let share share. I want to learn also.

yeh.. like it's been said so many times.. amp plays a huge huge part in tone.. i'd rather people go get a decent amp, doesnt have to be tube, but relatively ok sounding, before coming to buy pedals.. not that no pedals will sound good with low-end amps but i can be sure to say that most pedal will shine with a good amp.. my own amp isnt super good but decent sounding.. i havent own my laney VC30 for too long.. about 1 year but i havent regret it abit.. then again, it's a personal choice.. ;D
i certainly don mind if people borrow a pedal or two to try out amps if u want.. that one can be arrange lah..

The tonebone is really damn power sia..... Though quite costly but consider money well spent since the tube pedal can nail almost any distortion tones with a little tweaking... Like what XHT says... I also want to be unique so i use tonebone instead of J & H... ha,ha...

imho.. i think the tonebones dials a more marshall amp sound than some of marshall's pedals like the jackhammer.. a lil pricey though..
