Would using the tri-ac as a normal stompbox (i.e. in front of the amp) make it sound bad? Also, has anyone tried the Catalinbread Teaser Stallion? The feedbacking function seems really cool!

using the tri ac in the effect loop or straight to amp input will make a difference, but it definitely wont make it sound bad. Infact, i do prefer it into the amp input then the effect loop.
I have the teaser stallion. Imho, it is a rather nice sounding distortion pedal. It can double up as a overdrive pedal too, with the gain knob turn down. For full blown distortion, it is actually more suited for hard rock sounding distortion then metal distortion.
The feedbacking function is not really a authentic sounding feedback that one can get in the usual way of gain, loud volume and position of guitar in relative to amp.
The teaser side is actually more synth sounding, like what the catalinbread site stated. For what it does, you can get a "weeeeeoooooooooaaaaaaassssseeeeeee" sound coming from the amp when its engaged
You can play the guitar as it is, but once you stop, the mad oscillation sound will keep on going in the background and using the volume, tone knob plus switching between pickups, you can varies the pitch of the oscillation. Its a fun pedal that give you some whacked out sound other than just straight overdrive and distortion.

okay, looks like its more of a novelty effect than anything else.

that depend on the genre of music one is playing, i guess. If you are into manipulating sound using effect and guitar, its something fun and able to get some weird moment especially if you combine with other effect
But if just playing normal straight ahead rock, metal or any other genre that does not require that moment. Yeah, its pretty much a novelty item.
