Presented by the Esplanade, Aging Youth Productions’ event “We Came Down From The North Again” will feature the fresh new bands from our neighbouring country, Malaysia, performing along with the veterans and fan favourites. The musical genres of the bands stretch the gamut from retro rock to indie electronica. It’d be a showcase of very diverse Malaysian musical acts.
Friday 3 October 2008
a. Estrella - 7:30pm
Formed in 2006 and armed with their guitars and heartfelt tunes, the quintet began circulating the Kuala Lumpur music scene with their own brand of acoustic music. Numerous open-mic sessions and gigs at notable shows around town followed suit. Gaining some pretty decent exposure in the media as well as the indie scene, Estrella further evolved their genre from indie jazz to a slightly more complex sound, with dreamy and spacey after-effects. Everyday musings and inward thoughts are the main elements in their music, using simplicity as the main staple.
Having worked their way to perfecting their existing and new material, Estrella’s self-titled album was released on the 28th of December 2007. Following the release of the album, Estrella released two singles ‘Ternyata’ and ‘Stay’ to reach-out to both the Malay and English markets.

b. Reza Salleh - 8:45pm
Owing much of his young singing career to the Seattle sounds of Nirvana, the rap-rock edge of Rage Against the Machine, the vocal stylings of Black American vocalists, and a whole list of other musical influences, Reza Salleh performs music which is a mish-mash of elements drawn from such influences.

a. Citizens Of Icecream - 7:30pm
Attributing a year and a half with Malaysian record label Soundscape Records as bringing great growth to the band, Citizens of Icecream, which is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia craft their music as a sonic environment where audiences are invited to come in and dream.

b. Telebury - 8:45pm
Formed in 1999, the band’s name was inspired from an electric guitar, Fender Telecaster and Michael Eavis' Glastonbury festival. They are mainly influenced mostly by The Cure, Longpigs, Elbow and the beloved Radiohead. Telebury is a three guitar attack band. The band has released their first EP Is There Us In You? back in 2003 with 2 hit songs ‘Overdrive’ (number 2 at Australian Digital chart and number 1 at Malaysian radio stations) and ‘God Speed Your Love’ (as best and favourite song). Telebury has played various shows in Kuala Lumpur, Baybeats 2004, a tsunami benefit in Penang and a band festival in Kuching.

c. furniture - 10:00pm
At every turn, furniture attempts to strike that elusive balance between bold invention and comforting familiarity in its music. Described variously as post-rock, shoegaze and avant-pop, the band never strays far from being artful, honest, sweeping and emotional. Having played major regional music festivals, furniture is currently writing new material and previewing them at their upcoming shows.

a. Jerome Kugan - 7:30pm
Jerome sings and plays guitar, shakers and sometimes has a laptop as his band. He is one-third of Troubadours Enterprise, a company that organises singer songwriter gigs around KL, including KL Sing Song. The other two thirds are singer songwriters Azmyl Yunor and Tan Sei Hon. He has just released his solo debut album entitled Songs For A Shadow in April 2008.

b. Lied - 8:45pm
You’ll hear a lot of big guitar riffs and passionate singing in Lied’s music. The debut EP Making Enemies is chock-full of that along with some unexpected twists. Primordial emotional catharsis, white noise, memorable melodies, melancholic dirges, weird sound effects, tender ballads, acoustic songs and pummeling overtures. Lied wants it all. In spite of the anything-goes approach to the music Lied will always depend on its songs having a sincere emotional core.
